What If I Am Not Related To That Person?

One of the biggest misconceptions people have with an Assault Family Violence case that is filed in Harris, County Texas is that both people must be related. In my practice as a criminal lawyer I have seen a girlfriend accuse her boyfriend's brother of this crime. This was technically allowed because she lived in the same household for a weekend. What is more disconcerting is that a former exboyfriend or lover may file charges even though they are no longer involved in a relationship. This type of law is ripe for jealous ex-whatevers to manipulate the law in their favor. They can use the law to not only hurt the person that they were in a relationship with, but any family of their ex's that they believed led to the end of the relationship. This is quite scary for people accused when they witness how easy it is for them to be arrested and then have to hire a lawyer to combat the false accusations rendered against them.
